English text

May Day is just around the corner and some of us will spend it in the countryside (if the weather allows us!). So it will be great to make our own DIY flower wreath to decorate our front door or porch.

DIY flower wreath

Materials

  • Florist scissors
  • Foam wreath ring
  • 2m color coordinated cord or ribbon
  • A selection of foliage, flowers and seedheads (we’ll need about 20 stems of big flowers, and 20 smaller ones plus lots of foliage in various sizes)

How to

Before we do anything, we need to ensure our flowers have been conditioned. To do this, strip of your flower stems of foliage and thorns (using a knife) and cut the stems at an angle. Place them in fresh, clean water and leave in a cool place, away from fruit and drafts, for 24 hours. This enables the flowers to ‘settle’ and ensures they’ve had a good drink before you use them.

1. Soak the ring in the sink or a bucket. Do not push it under the surface of the water, rather leave it to soak up the water itself. Take the ribbon or cord and loop around the wreath – this will be the top. Start by using the bigger leaves of your chosen foliage to cover the sides. Cut all the stems at an angle – this maximises surface area of the stem, allowing it to take up more water. If using soft stems, make the hole into which they are to go first with a harder, surplus stem.

2. If you have more than one type of foliage or flower, then ensure you are constantly turning your wreath to ensure even color and size distribution. For now, continue to use foliage only but do not try to cover every surface of the ring – this will happen quite naturally. To create a more organic look, cut the stems at different lengths but make sure the longest stems are no more than 5cm away from the edge of the wreath. Continue to build up the foliage until you are at a point where there is good but not complete coverage.

3. Now we can begin to add the flowers. Use the larger heads first and again, constantly turn the wreath as you do it; also cut the stems a bit shorter so they sit closer to the ring and a) support the weight of the big head and b) cover more surface. Also, don’t forget to put flowers inside and outside of the  ring, not just on top.

Once we have got all your big heads in, we should have covered a lot of the ring but we will still see spaces. Using some smaller flowers, cut the stems really short and poke these in between the other leaves and flowers to cover the final bits of the wreath.

And that’s it – your wreath is complete! Because the stems are in the foam ring, we can make the wreath ahead, but ensure you keep the foam ring damp (water it with a jug) and the arrangement in a cool place.
